CARNAL FORGE - Sweet Suffering
By Adrian ‘The Energizer’ Bromley

With album titles like Please...Die! (2001) and their current The More You Suffer, Sweden’s Carnal Forge are no doubt setting their thrash intensity on high and doing some serious damage to certain individuals who have done them wrong.

So who are the lucky ones?

"Many people out there," laughs guitarist Jari Kuusisto. "The album basically stems from the idea that no matter how much we suffer and go through in this band, the more we gain. Over the years we have been through a lot of shit where people have said stuff about the band. We have been through all this stuff and label’s ripping us off, et cetera, and it only makes us stronger. Basically, if you fuck us, we fuck you."

And you don’t care who it is. The culprits are gonna know who they are, right?

"For sure. A good example of this is WAR Music. It is no secret that I am not a fan of the label, which has since changed its name to New Haven Music. They totally ripped off Carnal Forge [the band is rounded out by singer Jonas Kjellgren, bassist Lars Linden, guitarist Petri Kuusisto and drummer Stefan Westerberg] and really fucked things up for us. We were almost on the verge of splitting up when we were going through this mess with them. We just turned things around on them and just used all this negative stuff going on and put it back out within our music. As well, during interviews I have been telling people how corrupt that label is and so hopefully from that, no one will want to work with them. They’re the ones suffering now."

He adds, "We were very angry but we knew we felt very strong about Carnal Forge. All of the anger we had within us went into the recording of a new album and trying to find a new label for us. We couldn’t care less about what they did to us; it was not a priority anymore, and finding a label was."

And through all of this struggling the band has released one of the strongest thrash records of 2003. On par with latest releases from thrash monsters The Haunted (2003’s One Kill Wonder) and Corporation 187 (2003’s Perfection In Pain), Carnal delivers a blistering, grab-you-by-the-throat thrash metal record that spews evil, anger and hatred with calculated intensity. About the new album and the thrash metal it serves up, the guitarist says, "I think we made a great album. I think Carnal Forge is one of the better bands doing this type of music right now. Of course, I listen to other bands of this genre and think they are much better than we are. But at the same time, I think we are offering a real high quality product and are easily one of the better bands out there right now. We have definitely increased our aggression with the new album, and I think everyone who is a fan of the band can feel it too."

Things seem to be going well for the band right now and Century Media seems to be doing a good job promoting the band and the new release. Are you guys happy being with Century Media?

"I feel that they have done a great job with us. They are willing to put us out on tour, they have shown a lot of interest with what we want to do, and they listen to the questions we have about the band and label.

"There are some things we want to do more, but we can’t always get what we want and we are very pleased with how we have been treated."
