LACUNA COIL – Touring Butterflies Abound!
By Adrian ‘The Energizer’ Bromley

NET-only

Lacuna Coil singer Cristina Scabbia is nervous about the band’s first ever support tour opening for Moonspell in North America. She’s also nervous about the climate overseas too.

"I know about all of the stuff that is going on over there, I just don’t want to think about it," says Scabbia about the Sept. 11th attack on the World Trade Center and the recent Nov. 12th crash of an American Airlines plane in the Rockaway Beach section of Queens, New York (the incident happened the date of this interview). "Knowing all of this that is going on doesn’t make me feel relaxed at all, but I think the whole idea of touring for the first time is keeping my spirits strong."

A lot of fans in North America are excited that Scabbia and her band are touring a few select dates in support of the well-received album Unleashed Memories. She says that the Milan, Italy-based band is more than ready to tour America.

"We are all totally excited to be able to tour. This is like a dream come true for me. I have always dreamt about going to a place so far away like America, and my dreams are finally coming true as the tour is about to start.

"I’m excited because we have a lot of fans over there," reveals Scabbia. "We have received lots and lots of e-mails from fans asking us to come and play in the United States. I hope our fans will come out and see us play."

With numerous EPs of material and the new LP under their belt, what kind of a set list will the band play during their opening slot?

"I guess it really depends on the amount of time we are given. Each tour stop is different I think," says the singer. "I think we will be playing 45-minutes of material with some material from Unleashed Memories and other songs from our older releases. There will be a good mix of old and new for fans to get excited about when they come and see us."

She adds, "We have never played here in North America, so we want to give it our best shot and leave the fans happy."

And seeing that Scabbia has never been to the U.S, does she have any plans on doing any sightseeing or taking in some good ol’ Americana?

"I don’t know if we’ll have enough time to do some sightseeing while on the tour. Each show is like the next day so we just play, pack up the bus and go to the next town. We have very few days off."

I have a feeling you are going to be in for a culture shock. North America is very different than Europe.

"Really? I hear that a lot from people, so I am dying to see what it is all about."

So I guess you’ll be having one huge party while over here?

"Not me," explains Scabbia. "I don’t drink while on tour. I need a lot of sleep. I still have fun, but sleep is a big deal for me on tour. If I don’t get sleep, there might be some problems with the following day’s show."

That bad, eh?

"Yes. I save my party time for when I am not touring. Then I can just let loose."

Be sure to check out Cristina Scabbia and the rest of Lacuna Coil on tour with Portugal’s Moonspell.
